Alabaster Chandeliers
The Alabaster diffusers and shades used on our chandeliers are all carved by hand using traditional skills passed down over countless generations.

Like all such art forms, the skills required to produce such high quality translucent light diffusers is rapidly being lost to industrialisation. The diffusers used on any one of our chandeliers are manufactured by hand from one block of Alabaster to give the closest match possible of the diffusers on each chandelier. Some slight variations should be expected due to the nature of the material.

These chandeliers are beautiful. They are the product of thousands of years experience and becoming rarer with each passing year due to the accelerating loss of the skills required to make them.

As the skills are lost, so the labour costs of the diminishing artisans rises ultimately driving the price of the product up and beyond the reach of most people. In short, these chandeliers are never going to become cheaper, their value can only rise as their rarity increases. We count ourselves fortunate to be able to offer such a large range of these high quality hand made chandeliers at never to be repeated low prices.

If you would prefer the diffusers in glass rather than Alabaster, we offer all of this range in glass if prefered. As a rough guide, a chandelier with glass diffusers will be approximately 75% of the cost of the Alabaster version. This lower price is simply a reflection of glass being easier to work and cheaper to manufacture. Please telephone us for a quotation if you want your chandelier with glass diffusers rather than Alabaster.

Please Note: the stated height does not include the chain, which will vary in length to suit your ceiling height.

Description Continued...
Alabaster has been used for thousands of years to produce a wide range of products. The ancient Egyptians used it to make canopic jars and various other sacred objects. In 1817 a sarcophagus carved from a solid block of Alabaster was discovered in the tomb of Seti 1st near Thebes.

Alabaster is an easy to carve soft translucent material and has been used for thousands of years in the manufacture of purfume jars, vases, fruit and ornamental bowls, religious figures and ornamental carvings.

When cut in thin sheets, alabaster is translucent enough to be used for small windows, and has been used for just that in many medieval churches, especially in Italy. Large alabaster sheets are used extensively in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels (dedicated 2002) of the Los Angeles (California) Archdiocese.

Calcite alabaster is either a stalagmitic deposit, from the floor and walls of limestone caverns, or a kind of travertine, similarly deposited in springs of calcareous water. Its deposition in successive layers gives rise to the banded appearance that the marble often shows on cross-section, whence it is known as onyx-marble or alabaster-onyx, or sometimes simply as onyx — a term which should, however, be restricted to siliceous minerals.

The purest alabaster is a snow-white material of fine tiniforni grain. However it is often associated with an oxide of iron, which produces brown clouding and veining in the stone. This gives it the marbling effect so characteristic of the material and leads to an almost infinite variety in the colour and patterning of the mineral.
